Brittney Hazelton is a self-taught fantasy surrealist mix-media artist and an art journalist from Shreveport, Louisiana, currently residing in the Keithville area. Art has been a passion of theirs since a very young age. As a child, they would lose themselves imagining another world, creating characters, entire races, planets, cultures, and stories to escape the reality of tough life. Their imagination drove them to teach themselves art to show the world what they had dreamed of.
In 2015, Hazelton (Artist name: Sysica) discovered the art culture in their city and became immersed after being selected as a roster artist with the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.
Since that time, they have participated actively with both SRAC, Bossier Arts Council, The Agora Borealis, joined the art group Lab Rat Arts, and even helped form a nonprofit called NWLA Makerspace. They have been a part of many multi-artist exhibitions and had their exhibition called "The Art of Sysica" at Sleepy Hollow.
In 2022, Hazelton joined the staff at KSLA News 12 as a digital content producer, covering all kinds of news but taking a special focus on art culture in the ArkLaTex. Due to their knowledge of the area's art culture, they were given a special digital segment called ArkLaTex Artistry, where they in-depth monthly mini documentary style interviews with artists and weekly Zoom interviews, steaming every Saturday at noon on KSLA's website and on the stream apps.
Artist Statement: The first step I take as an artist is to create my work is to imagine greater more vivid worlds. My heart and soul are in these vast alternate planes. I cherish bringing them to light for others to see.
