Andrew Wilcox

Andrew Wilcox is a young pianist from Boylston, MA currently residing in the Hartford Area. Beginning piano lessons at age 4, Andrew studied classical piano under the tutelage of Dawn Bennett where he studied the works of Mozart and eventually the ragtime pianist Scott Joplin. As Andrew entered middle school, the high school band director at Tahanto Regional High School, bassist Rick Cain, took notice of Andrew and introduced him to jazz formally by exposing him to artists like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Lee Morgan. Through this exposure, Andrew began studying under numerous musicians in the Worcester Area, most notably Dick Odgren, Rich Ardizzone, and Tucker Antell. Following up High School, Andrew continued down to the Hartt School where he studied with world renowned musicians including pianists Rick Germanson, Chris Casey, Matt DeChamplain, and Zaccai Curtis, saxophonists Javon Jackson and Abraham Burton, trombonist Steve Davis, and bassist Nat Reeves. While in school, Andrew spent his time being around many local elders who gave him invaluable experiences to couple with his learning. Their encouragement combined with his intrinsic motivation led Andrew to begin gigging around Hartford. One of these formative experiences were the gigs at Integrity n’ Music. Integrity n’ Music was the perfect laboratory for students perfecting their craft and developing their own sounds. Andrew was one of these students and experimented with his first bands here, first a quintet and then a sextet. By the end of his time at the Hartt School, Andrew had established himself as a young up and coming musician within the Hartford area, which included making himself a regular mainstay at Black-Eyed Sally’s as a bandleader, sideman, steward and listener. Following his graduation from Hartt in May of 2020, Andrew started his Masters program of studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. There, he studies composition and arranging under Jeff Holmes and Felipe Salles. Andrew can currently be seen playing throughout the New England Region performing with his trio and sextet or as a sideman with a number of musicians including Yoron Israel, Haneef Nelson, Ed Byrne, Rob Zapulla, Ed Fast, Jonathan Barber, The Glenn Miller Orchestra and the New London Big Band. Andrew has had the opportunity to play venues such as The Mosesian Center for the Arts, Black-Eyed Sally’s, Dewey's Jazz Lounge, The Buttonwood Tree and the Butler-McCook House.
