My first children’s book started to write itself in my head in the few spare moments I had while teaching 7th and 8th graders at Fair Park Preparatory Academy. The next year, I taught 6th graders, and that solidified my certainty that this series was needed and would work. Math. Are you still reading? I didn’t enjoy or appreciate math until I took calculus for the second time and, after great effort, had a sense of being at the top of a mountain, looking back at all the repetitive exercises I’d gone through to reach the summit where the air was clear and crisp and positively magical things could happen with numbers and planes that I hadn’t known were there all along. I want that experience to be available to everyone. But math education gets a bad rap, and many students give up on it as soon as they can. My mission is to present children’s books about math written at a level that is accessible to very young children and their parents or siblings who read to them. I hope the stories and illustrations spark curiosity about math that will make readers excited to take those first steps up the mountain. And to keep climbing. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Languages at the University of New Mexico, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Centenary College of Louisiana, and have attended many workshops on teaching and math curriculum.   Please see MathIsNuts.com for more information.
