Brian Townsend

As a visual/mixed-media artist I explore the intersection of enigmatic realities, challenging viewers' perceptions by incorporating unresolvable contradictions that prompt reflection and questioning of the unknown. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, I draw inspiration from the midnight majesty of Lake Michigan's skyline and landscape, as well as the cities vibrant cultural heritage. My work has been featured in various venues, including Chicago's Gallery 37, What's Happening Magazine for my Egyptian murals at North Chicago's Cultural Center, and custom apparel for non-violence parades supporting Jesse Jackson and Rainbow PUSH. I've also created custom apparel for meet-and-greet event with the late, great Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta murals with C4 Arts Council and the Atlanta Hawks. Now a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana, I volunteer at Common Ground Church, where I teach sewing classes to the youth and I participate in food pantries and clothing drives with Church of the Highlands, Living Epistle, and Community Renewal. I aim to spark conversations about environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Artist Statement: As a visual/mixed-media artist, I explore the interplay of color, texture, and emotion to craft immersive experiences that invite viewers to connect with their inner worlds.Through vibrant hues, organic forms and layered compositions, I aim to capture the fleeting moments of beauty and wonder that often go unnoticed in our daily lives. My creative process is deeply rooted in the human condition and driven by a desire to tap into the collective unconscious. I draw inspiration from the nature and the mysteries of the universe, distilling these influences into a visual language that speaks directly to the soul. Ultimately, my goal is to create art that not only captivates and delights the eye, but also sparks the imagination and fosters a deeper connection to ourselves, to one another and to the world around us.
