My name is Kathryn Zeringue, I have a BFA in Painting with a minor in Psychology (as of Fall, 2021) from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I have a deep interest in people and the psyche as well as a great love for art and self-expression. I'm a big mental health advocate, as I experience depression and anxiety and mental illness runs throughout my family. I address the psyche by the use of the figure in my work. My painting process often involves the use my hands and feet directly on the canvas instead of using brushes. I build up several layers of paint with aggressive, emotive strokes. Most of my process involves the practice of psychic automatism; for example, painting on one canvas and stamping it onto another, then finding the figure in the abstract and pulling it out with more layers and lines, refining it. This process that I've learned to love reflects the presence of the subconscious within the conscious decisions I make. My recent work is about trauma dissociation.
