Artist Statement – Jrayis Deyond (Jerrick Thomas)
Although born Jerrick Thomas, the emergence of Jrayis Deyond marks a profound evolution of artistry—an ever-unfolding journey of self-expression through literary works and theatrical interpretations. Proudly born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, I remain deeply rooted in my community while embracing curiosity and continuous growth as a life learner and creative spirit.
My transition into full-time artistry began in 2020, but the seeds of my creative expression were planted long before then. Since 2017, I have been a self-published author, producing works that speak to personal transformation, identity, and truth. Titles such as Coming Full Circle, Coming Full Circle 2, The Confessions of a Conceited Drama King, Catching Up with Me, and Quarantine Quest are just a glimpse into my expanding body of work.
In 2023, I was honored to receive an Honorable Mention from Literary Arts Critic Sanderia Faye for my poem Wishing Well in Critical Mass Eleven. That same year, I was selected as one of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s Roster Artists, a recognition that continues to affirm my presence and impact in the literary arts community. My poem Paint Me was featured by Festival for Poetry, and in 2025, Dear Black Gay Man will be reprinted in Handbasket Zine’s “Simply the Best” issue—praised as one of the most powerful pieces the publication has ever shared.
These milestones reflect more than just personal success—they represent my commitment to amplifying the voices of those too often unheard. It is my goal to share my voice and talents with other creatives and to build bridges through storytelling and performance. It is also my mission to inspire and uplift members of the African American and LGBTQIA+ communities, encouraging them to own their narratives and explore the boundless possibilities of the arts. My work is not just a reflection of who I am—it’s an offering. A call to be seen, to be heard, and to be understood.
Artist Statement: My mission is to be of service within my community, using my gifts and art as a vessel of light, truth, and expression. As I continue to grow, my creativity makes room for me—opening doors, creating connections, and allowing my work to speak on my behalf. Through every piece, I aim to reflect the spirit of resilience, hope, and purpose, standing as a testament to the power of showing up fully and authentically in the world.
