Jan gathers much of her inspiration from the natural world around her, working with materials like butterfly and cicada wings, pressed flowers, and soils collected from various areas around the American West. She also enjoys working with charcoal, gilding, acrylic paint, and experimenting with surfaces such as mylar, aluminum, and whatever types of paper and fabric she finds texturally interesting.
She graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana with a Bachelor of Arts in studio art. She plans to move to her mother's home state of Colorado (where she derives much of her inspiration) and pursue a master's degree in arts management in the coming years.
