Elaine Botelho-Fairbanks

Originally from Chelmsford, England, I moved to the United States as a young teenager. I became an American citizen, joined the United States Air Force, and am a proud disabled veteran. I consider myself fortunate to have gone back and forth across the Atlantic, living in England, Germany, and the United States, as well as living and traveling extensively throughout Europe, Central America, and the United States. Art has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. My Grandmother would plan day excursions for me to attend art galleries, museums, libraries, and institutions throughout England. I was born not long after World War II ended and England, in particular London, was rebuilding. Despite being so young, I recognized the resolve of fellow citizens and the joy they expressed as art collections were restored to museums and galleries after being hidden and stored away for so long. As a result, I developed a “need” to have art in my life, recognizing the therapeutic benefits it provides the mind and soul. Although I work with several mediums, I have been fascinated by mosaics and quilting since childhood. I believe, in my constant quest for perfection, these two mediums allow me to take broken glass, tiles, china, or pieces of fabric and create an item of beauty for others to enjoy. If I am not feeling well or have “bad vibes,” I refuse to work on any creations to avoid passing on negative energy. I also use bright colors, mixed with each other, to lift mine and others’ emotions as well as pursue color coordinating capabilities. I strongly believe everyone belongs in/on this world and we all have something to contribute. It is up to us to discover what our contributions will be as well as to acquire and maintain respect for all living beings.
