Kaithlyn Cortez

Kaithlyn Cortez is a professional soft sculpture artist who specializes in creating original plush creations. By combining her love of natural landscapes with hints of her Filipino heritage, she is able to invent original plush sculptures that are whimsical and inviting. Kaithlyn's passion for studying plush designs began at the age of 13. Her mother taught her the basics of sewing using a needle and thread; her brother, Darren, later taught her to use a sewing machine. Kaithlyn's passion for sewing soft textiles guided her journey from simple needle and thread work to breathing life into one-of-a-kind, dimensional plush creations. These days, she works tirelessly to honor the traditions of her culture and to spread joy wherever she can.

Artist Statement: By being a soft sculpture fiber artist, I allow myself to tune into the magic and wonder of aliveness. My connection to fabric and sewing can be traced back to several generations of family members. If seen through a wider lens, my connection to fabric can be traced back to hundreds of years to the very first doll: rag dolls. By carrying forth this ancient tradition of manipulating fabrics to create tools for comfort and healing in the form of stuffed "dolls" or plushies, I'm able to open up a line of communication with myself and the world at large with a voice of my own. The self-developed technique I use showcases a clear obsession with unique, organic shapes to create dimensional creatures heavily influenced by the cosmos and Earth itself, our collective home.
