Pull up a chair and transport yourself to New Orleans in the 1920s. Dr. Daylight’s Jazz Co. breathes new life into traditional jazz favorites and transforms "pop" songs into jazz standards.
Since forming in 2018, the Company has experienced steady growth with a self-titled debut album of 12 songs traversing multiple genres with a jazz twist, from “Hotel California” to the American Songbook standard, “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” The song list even includes original compositions by band leader Jake Spinella: “Second Line Snort” and” Boudoir Blues.” The album combines the niche jazz enthusiast with a top 40 listener, creating an inventive and unique musical experience.
Their newest project, Potluck, showcases an evolved sound; rich with brass, rhythm, and special arrangements crafted for the guest vocalists. Recorded at Piety Street Records in May, the Company remains largely influenced by the great pianists of the era: Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Count Basie, the songs are reminiscent of traditional jazz associations. Arrangements don’t stick with the “rules” of the genre - reconstructing ideas from the Romantic era and even early NOLA funk into 20’s renditions.
