I was born the youngest of four sons in Ruston, Louisiana. My first formal training in art and photography came in middle school and college respectively. After graduating from Louisiana Tech, I taught middle school English until my retirement from education. After a long hiatus from art, I accepted a friend's challenge to take a class in painting in acrylic from a local artist. Eventually, I began dabbling with oils under the tutelage of Robin Clawson. My favorite references for painting come from photos I've taken on trips with my husband Steven, who is the best trip planner ever.
Artist Statement: Art is a language for the soul. Ever since I was a child, I've been moved by works of art, whether they be musical, visual, literary, or cultural. it's as if there's a place in my soul that can only speak the dialects of painting, sculpture, prose, or fashion. Art has now become a way for me to focus on giving that piece of my heart an outlet that I had shut down earlier in life. As I've grown older, I've learned the value of practicing presence, and art is a good place to do just that. Mixing colors and applying paint demands that I focus my attention on the present, and photography requires me to stop and notice the beauty around me that I might otherwise have missed.
